It can also be used as a carrier for other chemicals in analytical methods. The alkyl substituents on this molecule are important for its efficiency as a surfactant. The chloride group interacts with the water to form hydrochloric acid, which lowers the pH and increases the solubility of many organic compounds in the water. 1-Butyl-2,3-dimethyl-imidazoliumhexafluorophoshate is soluble in lipids and can interact with red cell membranes.
