It is an organic compound that can be a mixture of two stereoisomers, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 2-(2-chloro-4-fluoro-phenoxy)propanoic acid. The name "2,4-D" derives from the chemical structure's two central atoms: a chlorine atom bonded to four carbon atoms and a hydrogen atom bonded to two carbon atoms. 2,4-D has been shown to have light exposure synergistic effects when combined with other herbicides such as cyclohexane ring or diphenyl ether. This synergism can increase the weed's susceptibility to the pesticide by up to 1000%. This chemical also has an inhibitory effect on mitochondrial cytochrome P450 enzymes in animals and humans.
