This reaction mechanism can be explained by the formation of hydrogen bonds between the magnesium ion and the oxygen atoms on the diethylene glycol molecule. Diethylene glycol dibutyl ether reacts with water to form diethylene glycol monobutyl ether and ethoxyethanol. X-ray crystal structures reveal that it contains nitrogen atoms.
