It is a homogeneous catalyst, which means it can be dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent and still maintain its catalytic activity. 3-Hexyn-1-oL has been shown to be stereoselective for the hydrogenation of alkenes, producing only one geometric isomer of the product. The use of 3-hexyn-1-oL as a catalyst was demonstrated using x-ray absorption spectroscopy.
