The chloride ion can be detected by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. 2-Methoxythiophene can also be used to detect cancer cells in urine samples because it reacts with nucleophilic groups on the cancer cells and cleaves bonds between chloride ions and nucleophilic groups on the cell surface. This reaction produces hydrogen chloride, which is detectable by gas chromatography.
