The molecule can be reacted with 3-mercaptopropionic acid to form polyethylene glycols, which are widely used as additives to various products, including foods. 1-Octadecanethiol is also being studied for use as an electrode material in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and as a cathode material for lithium ion batteries.
