It can be used as an antioxidant and has been shown to have protective effects against oxidative injury in rat liver microsomes, K562 cells, and Hl-60 cells. a-(4-Pyridyl N-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone has also been shown to protect against redox cycle reactions that result in the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. This compound has been shown to be effective as a model system for the study of reactive species and redox potentials.
