It is used to control weeds in non-cropland areas such as highways, railroads, and airports. 2-[3-(Trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]nicotinic acid is an acetonitrile-soluble compound that is applied by aerial spraying or ground application. The chemical has been shown to have low toxicity to humans, birds, and mammals. 2-[3-(Trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]nicotinic acid binds to the organic matter in topsoil and prevents the formation of new organic matter through biotic and abiotic processes. This process is called mineralization. The herbicide does not bind to the macropores in the soil and therefore does not affect plant growth at high concentrations.
