The drug is an amino acid derivative and can be synthesized in two different crystalline forms. It exhibits a depressant effect on the central nervous system (CNS) by acting as an antagonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5HT1A receptors. The drug also has antipsychotic properties. Asenapine has been shown to have efficacy in the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It may also be effective in the treatment of depression with psychotic features or major depressive disorder with psychotic features. Asenapine is administered orally and is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream
