Ynés Mexía: Science, courage, and over 500 species discovered

24 May 2025

Ynés Enriquetta Julietta Mexía (1870–1938) was no ordinary botanist. She began her scientific career at the age of 51, defying all the conventions of her time. In just over a decade, she traveled from Alaska to the Amazon, collected more than 145,000 specimens, and discovered over 500 new plant species. Some of these discoveries were so significant that botanical genera were named after her, such as Mexianthus.

Her expeditions were not easy: she often traveled alone, lived with indigenous communities, faced diseases, and crossed jungles, mountains, and rivers—never letting anything stop her pursuit of knowledge. Her scientific legacy lives on in the herbaria of institutions such as the Smithsonian, the New York Botanical Garden, and Harvard University.

At CymitQuimica, we share that same vocation for advancing science by facilitating access to high-quality research materials worldwide. We know that every project, no matter how small, can have a lasting impact—just like Mexía’s work.
