Description:Amyloid beta (Aβ) is a peptide fragment of the amyloid precursor protein, which is cleaved by β- and γ-secretases to form Aβ. It has been shown to be an activator of presynaptic ion channels and can bind to receptors such as the low density lipoprotein receptor related protein 1 (LRP1). Amyloid beta influences cell biology in many different ways. For example, it inhibits the growth of neurons and can induce apoptosis. In addition, this peptide can inhibit the activity of ion channels by binding to specific sites on their surface. Amyloid beta also binds to antibodies that are used for research purposes.
