This peptide has been shown to be a major component of amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's Disease. It is one of the most abundant proteins in the brain and is found in association with beta-amyloid protein (A4). The precursor protein for APP is encoded by the gene on chromosome 21. APP and its products are involved in many cellular processes such as signal transduction, cell proliferation, apoptosis and inflammation. APP can be cleaved by Beta-secretase or Gamma secretase to release A4 and N-APP.
