It is a fluorescent compound that can be extracted from cells with solid phase microextraction (SPME) and then detected by UV light. Ethyl 2-methoxypyrimidine-5-carboxylate has also been shown to have antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). Ethyl 2-methoxypyrimidine-5-carboxylate has also been shown to induce apoptosis in tumor cells, as well as inhibit the growth of tumor cells in culture. It has also been shown to inhibit the proliferation of leukemia cells, but not normal bone marrow cells. Further studies are required in order to determine whether it is suitable for use as an anti-cancer therapeutic agent.
