Description:Galacturonic acid is a dicarboxylic acid that is produced in plants by the enzyme L-galactono-1,4-lactone oxidase. The compound inhibits the synthesis of galacturonate, which is a precursor for the biosynthesis of pectin, a major component of plant cell walls. Galacturonic acid also has anti-inflammatory properties and may be useful in treatment of inflammatory disorders such as arthritis. The compound has significant interactions with enzymes involved in protein synthesis and chemical biology. In vitro assays show that galacturonic acid inhibits the activity of synthetase, an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of amino acids to a growing peptide chain during protein synthesis. It also inhibits hydrogen bonding between phosphate groups and hydroxyl groups on proteins.
