Description:2-Bromo-5-iodophenol is an oxidant that is used in the industrial preparation of elastin. It has been shown to cause an increase in blood pressure and to induce aneurysms in animals. 2-Bromo-5-iodophenol is not a direct substrate for the enzyme diazotization and must be treated with sodium nitrite before use. When used as a dye, 2-bromo-5-iodophenol causes fragmentation of elastin and anisotropy of the elastin fibers. This chemical also causes cytoplasmatic changes in cells, which can be seen by analyzing protein synthesis.
