N-tert-Butoxycarbonylimidazole is an inexpensive and industrially scalable reagent for the preparation of dexmedetomidine by displacement of chloride from 2-(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl)-1,1,3,3,-tetramethyluronium hexafluorophosphate (HBTU) with the imidazole group on n-tetrabutoxycarbonylimidazole.
