This dye has also been shown to have a low energy optical absorption band with a broad absorption spectrum that ranges from UV to visible light. Cis-dithiocyanatobis(N,N'-2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid)ruthenium is a redox dye that undergoes oxidation and reduction reactions to produce an electron transfer between the dye molecule and the electrode. This electron transfer is enhanced by hydrogen bonding interactions between the dye molecule and the polymer film.
