Description:Cis-diethylstilbestrol is a synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen that is prescribed for the treatment of cancer in women. It binds to nuclear DNA and alters the effect of other genes, which leads to cell growth and division. Cis-diethylstilbestrol was shown to have a mitogenic effect on cell nuclei when added to an experimental model system. It also stimulated serum prolactin levels, a hormone involved in breast milk production, in rats. The apoptotic effects of cis-diethyl stilbestrol are mediated by estrogen receptors present in the cell nuclei. The drug has been shown to be toxic at high doses but not at low doses.
