Description:Dithio-bis-maleimidoethane is a drug transporter that binds to fatty acids. The reactive maleimide group reacts with the thiol group of proteins, forming a disulfide bond. This reaction is irreversible and may lead to the dysfunction of synaptic transmission. Dithio-bis-maleimidoethane has been shown to induce apoptosis in cells through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and mitochondrial membrane depolarization. It also upregulates genes that are involved in inflammatory responses, such as cytokines and chemokines, which may contribute to its immunosuppressive properties. Dithio-bis-maleimidoethane has been used as a model system for studying the effects of oxidative stress on synaptic function and neuronal survival in vitro. In vivo studies have shown that dithio-bis-maleimidoethane can cause an ischemic reperfusion injury in rats.
