Description:1,4-Dihydroxy-2-butanone is a monosaccharide that is obtained by hydrolysis of 1,4-dihydroxyacetone. It has been used as a substrate in biological studies to investigate the microbial degradation of carbohydrates and the mechanisms of acetone metabolism. This compound is also used as an intermediate in organic synthesis and biotechnology. 1,4-Dihydroxy-2-butanone can be oxidized to form acetaldehyde and CO2 via pyrolysis. In addition, this compound has been shown to inhibit carbohydrate synthesis through inhibition of glycolytic enzymes. The functional theory explains this effect by proposing that 1,4-dihydroxy-2-butanone inhibits hexokinase and phosphofructokinase by forming covalent bonds with their active sites.
