Description:2,4-Dimethyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine is a neutral compound that is synthesized by interscience and is used in the synthesis of other compounds. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus licheniformis and Staphylococcus aureus. 2,4-Dimethyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine reacts with an active site on the bacterial cell wall enzyme (peptidoglycan synthetase) by forming an adduct that inhibits its function. This results in the inhibition of bacterial growth. The reaction mechanism involves protonation of the nitrogen atom at position 2, which leads to deprotonation of the nitrogen atom at position 4 and subsequent release of ammonia. The reactivity of this compound can be increased by adding piperidine as a base.
