It is metabolized by esterases to formic acid, which can cause hypersomnia, apnea, and acidosis. The solvated form of the drug has shown to be more potent than the nonsolvated form at inhibiting animal behavior. 7-Ethyl-10-(4-N-aminopentanoic acid)-1-piperidino)carbonyloxycamptothecin hydrochloride is also used as a prodrug for the synthesis of other drugs with anticancer activity.
