Description:2-Ethyl-4-hydroxy-5-methyl-3(2H)-furanone (EHMF) is a fatty acid that is extracted from acetate. EHMF has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as yeast and various fungi. In addition, it has been shown to be an inhibitor of HIV infection. EHMF inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species by polymorphonuclear leucocytes and can inhibit tumor growth in cancer gene therapy. This compound also has physiological activities such as the ability to enhance matrix effects and stimulate sodium ion uptake in cells, which may be due to its function as an energy metabolism intermediate or its action on physiological processes such as protein synthesis, cell division, or hormone secretion.
