MTX is an inhibitor of the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which produces prostaglandins and thromboxanes from arachidonic acid. MTX is metabolized by conjugation with glucuronic acid, sulfate, or methyl groups. The metabolites are excreted in the urine and bile.
