Description:2-Hydroxyethylurea is an inhibitor of the enzyme hydroxylase, which catalyzes the conversion of glycerin to hydroxyethylene. It is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of other drugs. 2-Hydroxyethylurea binds to an allosteric site on the enzyme and inhibits binding of substrate and coenzyme A, thereby inhibiting its activity. 2-Hydroxyethylurea also has a potent inhibitory effect on body formation in insects by inhibiting protein synthesis. This inhibition is due to its ability to bind to fatty acids, glycol ethers, and glycerin. 2-Hydroxyethylurea can be used as a precursor for other compounds by reacting with sodium citrate or hydrochloric acid. The reaction mechanism involves the substitution of an OH group with HCl or citrate to form an ester or carboxylic acid respectively.
