Description:5-Methoxyindole-3-carboxylic acid is an endogenous metabolite of serotonin. It is a neurotoxin that induces neuronal death and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. 5-Methoxyindole-3-carboxylic acid can be found in the plasma, liver, and faeces. The terminal half life is about 18 hours, but this can be increased by hepatic impairment. 5-Methoxyindole-3-carboxylic acid is metabolized via N-acetylation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are inhibited by drugs such as cimetidine or ketoconazole. This drug also interacts with other drugs such as phenobarbital and phenytoin to increase serum concentrations of 5-methoxyindole 3 carboxylic acid.
