Description:Methyl 5-methylthiophene-2-carboxylate is a reagent that has been used to introduce a sulfur atom into organic compounds. It reacts with molybdenum and carbon tetrachloride to produce methyl 5-methylthiophene-2-sulfonyl chloride, which can be hydrolyzed to form the corresponding thiophene carboxylic acid. The at1 receptor antagonist properties of this compound were first demonstrated in the late 1980s when it was found that it can block the action of angiotensin II by binding to AT1 receptors. This reaction scheme also includes an alcoholysis step, which converts methyl 5-methylthiophene-2-carboxylate into selenophene and carbon tetrachloride.
