It can be used as a reagent in the analysis of geosmin in water samples or copper salt in soil samples. DL-alpha-Methyllauric acid methyl ester is also used to calibrate gas chromatography systems by comparing retention times with linear calibration curves. This compound is analyzed using headspace microextraction for metal halide compounds.
