Description:2-Methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one is a β-unsaturated ketone that has been synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. It can be obtained by the reaction of hydrochloric acid with 2-methylpropene. The stereoselectivity of the reaction depends on the steric interactions between the chloride ion and the α,β unsaturated carbonyl group in 2-methylpropene. The surface methodology used to study this molecule was XPS, which showed that there is one methyl group on each side of the double bond. This molecule can also be used as a precursor to vitamin D3, which is an important regulator of calcium metabolism. Molecular modeling studies have shown that this molecule has two possible configurations, which are in trans configuration and cis configuration.
