It is produced by plants, including various species of the genera Mentha and Piper, and has been found in peppermint oil. p-Menthane is structurally similar to propranolol hydrochloride, a drug used for the treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris. The cyclohexane ring in p-menthane can be synthesized from geranyl pyrophosphate via three steps: 1) oxidation with potassium permanganate, 2) conversion to the corresponding acid chloride with thionyl chloride, and 3) reaction with methylamine.
