Description:S-Methyl thiobutyrate is a sample preparation reagent that can be used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. It is used to study transfer reactions in bacteria and carboxylesterase activity. S-Methyl thiobutyrate is also an analytical reagent that has been shown to inhibit the enzyme methionine S-methyltransferase, which converts L-methionine into dimethyl and methyl esters. This inhibition prevents the conversion of L-methionine into other products such as coenzyme A and acetyl coenzyme A, which are important in fatty acid synthesis. S-Methyl thiobutyrate can also be used as a vaginal antiseptic to treat bacterial vaginosis or candidiasis. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by preventing the formation of thioesters with proteins, leading to cell death by disrupting protein synthesis.
