The catalytic activity of osmium(III) chloride hydrate depends on the surface area, which can be regulated by milling and particle size. The material has been shown to have a high degree of stability and to be reusable for at least 50 cycles. Osmium(III) chloride hydrate has been shown to enhance the rate of nitrous reduction, with rates up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than those observed without this material. This catalytic activity is reversible and does not affect the pH or concentration of nitrite ion in solution.
