Description:Pamidronatedisodium is a drug used in the treatment of osteoporosis. It has antiangiogenic properties, which means that it blocks the growth of new blood vessels and slows tumor growth by reducing the availability of oxygen and nutrients to cancer cells. Pamidronatedisodium is also used to control cancer pain and to increase bone density in patients with cancer or other diseases that cause severe bone loss. Pamidronatedisodium inhibits tumor cell growth by binding to hydroxyapatite, a mineral found in bones. This drug does not affect normal cells because they do not have as much hydroxyapatite. Pamidronatedisodium is administered intravenously as a solution for injection (an infusion). The drug can be given either as an initial bolus injection followed by continuous infusion or as a continuous infusion without bolus injection.
