It can be used as an extender to increase the viscosity and spacing in polyurethane foam. 3-Prop-2-ynoxypropane-1,2-diol also has a catalytic effect on reactions involving sodium chloride and potassium hydroxide. The chloropropane group makes it reactive towards other chemicals such as ethylene diamine and ethoxylate.
