It can be used as a transfer buffer for proteins or nucleic acids on a gel or membrane. Sodium dodecyl sulfate solution also has been found to inhibit the growth of bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, when combined with benzalkonium chloride, hydrogen bonding interactions, and plasma mass spectrometry.
