This drug is a nonselective inhibitor of serotonin uptake and also inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine. 5,6,7,8-Tetrahydropyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidine has been shown to enhance cardiac contractility without altering heart rate or rhythm in anesthetized dogs with experimental coronary artery occlusion. The drug also reversibly inhibits epileptic seizures in rats when administered intravenously at a dose of 1 mg/kg. 5,6,7,8-Tetrahydropyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidine has been shown to have insulin resistance effects in mice with diabetes mellitus and may be useful as a pharmaceutical
