Description:L-Tyrosine is a precursor of thyroid hormones and catalyzes the conversion of iodide to iodine. It also converts 3-iodo-l-tyrosine to thyroxine. L-Tyrosine is used in vitro assays as an inhibitor of diiodination, a process that involves the use of hydrogen peroxide and produces iodinating agents such as 3-iodo-l-tyrosine. L-Tyrosine has been shown to inhibit peroxidase activity mediated by the enzyme myeloperoxidase. This inhibition may be due to its ability to act as an antioxidant.
