It can be used as a phosphate donor in phosphoramidite synthesis to produce oligonucleotides for use in PCR amplification or in protein synthesis. 3'-Azido-3'-deoxythymidine methyl-D3 is also used as an antiviral agent because it inhibits viral replication by inhibiting viral reverse transcriptase.
