Description:6-Aza-2'-deoxy-5-methyl isocytidine is a synthetic nucleoside that is a purine analogue of cytidine. It has antiviral activity and can be used to synthesize oligonucleotides. The synthesis of 6-aza-2'-deoxy-5-methyl isocytidine starts with the removal of the methyl group from 5,6-diaminopurine to form 5-(2'-deoxy)isocytosine. This reaction can be done in two steps: first, the aminopurine ring is opened by heating it with hydrochloric acid and then reacted with sodium methoxide in methanol solution. 6-Aza-2'-deoxy-5-(2'-deoxy)isocytosine can then be converted into 6-(2'-deoxy)isocytidine by reacting it with ammonia in water or ammonium hydroxide solution.
