The sodium salt of ddA has been shown to be effective in the treatment of HIV infection. Sodium ddA is a crystalline, neutralized salt with an alkaline pH and a pKa of 9.4. It has been crystallized from an alkaline solution using Raney nickel as a catalyst. This product can be used to synthesize intermediates for pharmaceuticals or other chemical products.
