The activation of the molecule occurs in acidic conditions, which may be due to the formation of an amide bond between the terminal phosphate and the amino group on the phosphorylcholine. This same reaction can also occur in alkaline conditions. UDPC has been shown to inhibit viral replication, including HIV-1, by blocking reverse transcription of viral RNA into DNA.
