The mechanism of tumorigenicity may be due to its ability to bind covalently with DNA. 7-Nitrobenz[A]anthracene binds stereoselectively with nitro groups on proteins, which can lead to the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. It also adsorbs to silica gel and other polar surfaces, so it can be removed by adsorption chromatography or supercritical fluid extraction.
