Description:(1S)-1-(4-Nitrophenyl)ethan-1-ol is an intermediate in the synthesis of a chiral alcohol. It can be prepared by hydrogenolysis of (1R)-1-phenylethanol with palladium on carbon, followed by catalytic reduction of the nitro group. The hydrogenolysis can also be carried out in the presence of lipase, which will produce a higher yield. This intermediate can then be used to synthesize other compounds, such as 4-nitroacetophenone and chiral alcohols.
