∆2-Ceftazidime is a semisynthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is active against most Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. ∆2-Ceftazidime exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall and inhibiting cell wall synthesis. This drug also has been shown to inhibit ion channels in mammalian cells that are activated by peptides, such as glutamate receptors and ligand-gated ion channels. ∆2-Ceftazidime has also been used as a research tool for studying protein interactions with antibodies or other ligands.
