It exists in two phases, one organic and one aqueous, which are separated by an interface. The transfer mechanism is based on the solubility of 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide in the organic phase and its partition coefficient. The ternary mixture was studied with respect to its transport properties. A genetic damage study showed that 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide causes DNA fragmentation in cultured human cells, but does not affect cellular viability or proliferation.
