It can be used in the production of Zovirax, an antiviral drug for the treatment of herpes simplex virus. 2-(2-(2-Hydroxyethoxy)Ethyl)Isoindoline-1,3-Dione has been shown to inhibit viral replication by interfering with DNA synthesis and/or by altering the permeability of the cell membrane. This compound also displays strong antiviral activity against a wide range of viruses including herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, adenovirus, vesicular stomatitis virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), influenza A virus, and rotavirus.
