It has been used as a solid catalyst for the hydroxylation of coumarin derivatives, and has also been shown to be an effective precursor in the synthesis of dyes and pharmaceuticals. The kinetic data of this reaction are well-established and are available in the literature. 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran is not toxic to humans, but it can cause kidney fibrosis when given intravenously at high doses. This toxicity can be reduced by adding BHT to the solvent mixture.
