This reaction forms an ester bond between the carboxylic acid group and the alcohol group on the ethyl formate molecule. 1-Naphthyl propionate can also be obtained by reacting sodium taurocholate with ether extracts from animal tissue or fat. 1-Naphthyl propionate has been shown to inhibit viruses such as HIV and pseudotuberculosis bacteria.
