It can be used for diagnosis of autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, by detecting specific antibodies. 3-[(Tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl)amino]-1-propanesulfonic acid binds to the light-exposed areas of cells with high concentrations of creatine kinase, which are indicative of tissue damage. The antibody-antigen complex is then detected using laser ablation.
