It is structurally similar to styrene and has been found to be catalysed by proton, as well as by the presence of other compounds such as cytochrome P450. 2-Methoxy-1-phenylethan-1-ol is an ether with two ether linkages in its backbone, which form at the alpha carbon of the ethyl group and the oxygen atom of the methoxy group.
